is that last one a rufous back robin? papi sent me a very fuzzy video clip of a bunch of those making a skwak on his morning walk in Oaxaca. noisy buggers!
sorry can’t upload that attachment here.
Almost. It is a Rufous-bellied thrush. These birds sing a lot and they start the concert at 04:00. Some people think this habit is a nuisance. The other bird is a Rufous hornero.
ETA I would love to listen to the sound of your papai’s birds.
ETA How I hate this autocorrection feature. I wrote in my broken english and then the phone “corrected” It replacing the word I did chose with another one totally unrelated in Portuguese.
ha! beautiful!
it sounds similar, but not the same at all to what papi sent.
thanks for that.
one of my most crushing realizations about my mum’s slow decline is that she cannot hear the lovely birdsong around us. i always look up and prick my ears when mr. and mrs. cardinal come to call, but their faint, high chirp is just out of her range. same with the mockingbird’s melodious medley (which includes what sounds like a phone ringing). she can, however, hear and recognize the loud blue jays.
it gives me the big, giant sad that we may one day no longer hear the symphony of birdsong, whether from old age, other hearing disruptions or the loss of birds altogether due to calamitous climate change.
eta: mr. c came around a couple days ago on a rainy gray day. what a bright spot in the morning!
Saw a bunch more birds - jays, finches, etc. - but they either immediately flew away or insisted on keeping several ranks of branches between themselves and my camera lens. Why do birds have to be so troublesome all the time, I mean this fella stayed still and posed like a pro:
