2 gaggles of geese + fuzzy goslings

At first I thought the little bird was bothered by my presence. But then I noticed that there was something else on the other side of the stream catching her attention. It was another masked waster tyrant doing the same dance steps. It looked like a long distance ballet.

Kittens!

So far, only two I know of. I suspect at least one more, so I’m going out tonight to listen for them.

Things are kind of chaotic right now because we had a movie-worthy moment when I heard the first one. The kittens are on the move, and one followed Dulce to the food dish, but kept on going along the top of the wall to the very edge and looking like they were going to jump in an attempt to follow her. Luckily, I tempted it back my way and grabbed it before any accidents happened.

I’m rearranging furniture and cleaning up kitten tinkle, so I’ll post more later when things are under control. Sorry for the portrait mode.

Are you feeding her enough? Looks like she’s calling out for pizza

Congratulations! Hope everything goes smoothly!

Seriously, I’ve been feeding her since the final week of her pregnancy, but I don’t think she had been eating enough for the babies. When we go to the vet tomorrow I will ask them what I can do to fatten everybody up.

ETA: Dulce ate well, and I also gave her half of a meatball from my dinner. Then the kittens fed well and are sleeping on a pile of laundry from the hamper.

It is not the case of prejudice towards Kiskadees. But all the species look like the same bird! This one looks like a Lesser Kiskadee to me. Wait, could it be a Great Kiskadee? I don´t know.

Maybe it is just stress. I hope she gets well.

Dulce Update:

We’ve all gone to the vet this morning and received antibiotics (well, not me). Dulce and one of the kittens were able to come back home with me, but the adventuresome one from yesterday has a serious infection in his right eye and seems very lethargic this morning. He is going to stay overnight at the vet for rehydration, treatment, and monitoring.

My cats were herded into the spare bedroom for the night, but handled it well with no fussing. Coming back from the vet, I was able to switch accommodations for Dulce and the kitten so the rest of the cats can roam the apartment.

I want to keep them at least until the kittens are young adults who can take care of themselves, and then I will take them in to be vaccinated and spayed or neutered, depending on sex.

If you can socialize the kittens, a rescue might take them for adoption. That’s what we did with the feral and kittens we found. There was a fee but we felt it was worth the money because that rescue is very particular about who gets the cats

Edit: we separated mom and kittens when they were weaned and surrendered at 12 weeks. Our efforts at socialization worked, they were adopted almost immediately. Momcat was way too feral, so she went back to her wild life after being fixed and given rabies shot. The ear tipping saved her life later. Some asshole in the complex called animal control claiming she was aggressive to his toddler (the cat just dug his flowers or pooped in the pot or something). We told animal control he was lying. She was way too shy to even approach a kid. They saw the ear tip and were like “way to waste our time jerk”

Dulce had been hiding in an area of the property next to one of my neighbors with children. The kids are eager to play with them once they are in better shape.

This one, I’m sure, is a Great Kiskadee, because I heard him calling out loud: “Bem-te-vi, bem-te-vi”. It is portuguese and it is roughly translated as “I’ve seen you!” In other countries this bird calls out in its native language, or at least it is what people think the birds are saying.

In English, we’re told you actually call the bird Bem-te-vi in Brazil!

The call is an exuberant BEE-tee-WEE , and the bird has an onomatopoeic name in different languages and countries: In Brazil its popular name is bem-te-vi (“I saw you well”) and in Spanish-speaking countries it is often bien-te-veo (“I see you well”) and sometimes shortened to benteveo .
