Pretty sure 'The Alchemist' graphic novel was illustrated for the male gaze

Sorry, I’ve not read the Alchemist, it was just that whenever I think about “books popular in the manosphere” Rand pops in to my head. :+1:

Yeah, actually LOTS of us wimmins have and we’ve noticed the tired misogynistic tropes still hanging around some of them… Thankfully, many of the ones I’ve been in have decided that women are people not objects to be lusted over. Good thing that many of the modern comic book shops are run by adults, instead of man-children who can’t handle a little bit of criticism.

I think I read the Alchemist about 25 years ago. I faintly recall liking it at the time, but have no memory of any female character in it whatsoever, nevermind a scantily clad female character.

That said, 25 years ago was 25 years ago and I might not have noticed the things I’d have noticed now. There isn’t anything inherently wrong in writing a story about a man’s experience, but if it purports to depict something about all of humanity it really ought to include other members of the species.

No, of course not. And yeah, having women in a story from a man’s POV is a good idea, since most men know some women… :grimacing: The problem here is the way women are drawn… Note that @Rusty_Blazenhoff said for the “male gaze” not about men or for men. That’s specific thing, which rests on the idea of women being sex objects, usually. The women aren’t characters, but there for men’s gratification, nothing more, nothing less.

Kind of surprising in an article about the art in a graphic novel, but the illustrator’s name is never mentioned?

Maybe it’s the first (published) AI drawn graphic novel!? Look for embedded watermarks that say…idk…wintermute or maybe a brand? /s

While sorting my late friend’s book collection, I ran across Heavy Metal #4 and found these stinkers:

Are you familiar with Heavy Metal…? I expect its relative merit or lack thereof have been plumbed in depth, but it seems safe to say that “erotica” is quite typical in that case.

Made into a movie too, but I dont know if it was as hetero-teenboy oriented.

I’m just going to leave this clip here, and back away slowly without breaking eye contact.

Yes, I remember it from my teenage years. I just haven’t seen a copy in a long time

True, but the sequence with “Working in a Coal Mine” by Devo remains great!

ETA: Honestly, it is the only thing that has stuck with me from the movie

I didn’t grow up with the early stuff, but around the early 2010’s i had gotten a newer Heavy Metal issue. I had gotten it because i really enjoyed some of the artworks and comics in it, don’t recall it being overtly juvenile and hypersexualized. I’ll have to unbox my books at some point this weekend and see if i can find that issue
