My library has a sign on its collection bin
“No Encyclopedias
No National Geographics”
As long as it’s ethically and sustainably sourced, I see no problem.
I’ve always wondered about these. A lot of them were obviously bogus. Especially the ones with a ton of digging, but some others are more obtainable. They also went to say most, but not all, but still seems like painting them with the same brush. Not saying racism, but on the lazy side. The white guy gets the credit for “doing things right” and then a bunch of South East Asia (SEA) people who are sketchy. Who of the SEA people are also doing it right?
Primitive Life is a fairly good example IMHO. He definitely had a plan at one point about what he was going to do for the season, but I look at what he’s doing and it’s small scale. I do wish he showed how he got his limestone. That’s the bit where I’m weary. Granted, limestone is fairly easy to come across in SEA, but it would have been nice to see that in the production process.
I also wished he used the subtitles feature to talk about what he’s trying to do. Like in his lime kiln part 2, he’s seen gathering a bunch of flaky material. What is it? It looks important to his process. What is it doing here? Is it a type of coal of charcoal that’s laying around? He leaves it up to us to figure it out.
I get what the video is trying to do and they’re on point, but it’s sloppy and I wish they spent more time being less time on the sensational stuff and looking at the spectrum some more rather than a hyper focus on the sensationalist channels exclusively.
I’ve never thought much about whether they were using machines in making these structures - I’m always too hung up on the fact that the structures being created make no sense. Digging a hole as a shelter? Where any rain would fill it with water if it didn’t just collapse the whole thing? Sure. How they dug the hole hardly matters.
