Sounds like one of Asimov’s Robots books.

Pretty sure it wasn’t, actually… Robots didn’t have a whole lot to do with it IIRC.
Perhaps Robert Silverberg’s “The World Inside”? Or perhaps Harry Harrison’s “Make Room! Make Room!” (the basis for the film “Soylent Green”)? The late 1960s-early 1970s were big on overpopulated dystopias.

Even the blurb on the Sainsbury’s dog food – “meat with textured soya protein” – sounds like something from a 1970s dystopian sci-fi film.
