I lived in Cleveland very briefly in the late 70s. If was my first job after college, and involved wading in vats of PCBs and rappelling down sheer drops into effluent flows, so what’s not to like?

Having driven from Des Moines to Iowa City tonight with time to think about it, does it make sense I’m mostly annoyed with the sense of fear I get from the middle of the country?
I literally have been at two terrorist attacks in the US, one of which caused two towers a mile and a half from me to shudder to the ground, if anyone should be afraid of Muslims it should be me, right? But I’m not, because I live with them, share space, subway cars, see kind Muslims and Jews and Puerto Ricans all day long. Meanwhile, someone who lives in a 95% white town needs more guns for self protection? I saw a shirt tonight that said “stay calm and carry a gun,” but who’s calmer, the one too afraid to be without a pistol or the person who trusts people enough to not fear them?
I see entire states think Donald Trump is an answer, that fewer and prejudice and sending people away is a good response to people instead of listening and empathising, why wouldn’t I get annoyed at their laziness, their ideal of returning to a time when not everyone was treated with equal rights? It’s their fear of The Other and Change I get annoyed by, and if they bothered to change that wouldn’t it seem like they could bring more to the grown up table?
I’ve watched Don the Con for sixteen years up close and personal and they think he’s telling the truth? Why wouldn’t I see them gullible rubes?

Would it help you to know that all but one of the counties you drove through voted strongly for Obama in 2012? Or that my experience in Iowa was that the people of all backgrounds were fundamentally decent, something I wouldn’t necessarily say for other places I’ve lived?

Seventeen percent are undecided between Trump and Cllinton? He leads by double digits in the under 50 age group? Because he hasn’t said enough offensive things? How can anyone be undecided when he’s insulted the disabled, veterans, women, minorities, and encouraged violence? How can any rational person be on the fence at this point? Who else can he possibly offend? Who else can he make them fear?
And to top it off, thirty six percent have no opinion on Congress stalling on the Supreme Court? Fucking read a paper, get decided on something.
