Quotes on religion and the mythical Christian solar god Jesus's association with the Sun

When taken literally by zealot Christian believers, the following biblical scriptures have resulted in perilous and fatal consequences.

Mark 16:14-18

14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Luke 10:17-19

17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Acts 28:1-6

1 And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.
2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.
5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

Coots and his followers believe that God calls upon them to handle venomous serpents and to drink other poisons. Even if they are bitten, they will refuse medical treatment because they believe that they are worthy of God’s faith, and that their fate is in God’s hands.

But local authorities see these snakes as a reckless, even dangerous menace to public safety. Religious snake handling has been outlawed in most states, including Kentucky and Tennessee. Several snake-handling practitioners across the country have died after being bitten, and there are concerns about the poisonous snakes being let loose in communities.

A Tennessee law banning ownership of poisonous reptiles was passed back in 1947 after five worshippers were killed over two years. Pastor Coots even had a parishioner die in 1995 after she was bit by a rattlesnake during one of his services and refused an anti-venom treatment.

The son of a well-known snake-handling preacher who died of a snakebite in February has also suffered a painful rattlesnake strike, but on Tuesday said he was recovering.

Nobody!–not everybody.

Einstein had an opinion on religion that people cared about, so much so that someone cared enough to pay a lot of money for his opinion.

In January of 1954, just a year before his death, Albert Einstein wrote the following letter to philosopher Erik Gutkind after reading his book, “Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt,” and made known his views on religion. Apparently Einstein had only read the book due to repeated recommendation by their mutual friend Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer. The letter was bought at auction in May 2008, for £170,000; unsurprisingly, one of the unsuccessful bidders was Richard Dawkins…

…The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weakness, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still purely primitive, legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation, no matter how subtle, can change this for me. For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstition. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong, and whose thinking I have a deep affinity for, have no different quality for me than all other people…

Hey Khepra, what else do you do? I see a lot of posts in here with walls of text copied from other sources, and a little more effort going into your Hillary thread. I haven’t seen you in any of the other topic areas. Do you like to cook? Do you have any hobbies? Crafts? Sports? Art? Music? Anything else…

“I see a lot of posts in here with walls of text copied from other sources, and a little more effort going into your Hillary thread.”

When one thread is comprised of anti-religious quotes and actual religious scriptures, that are contradictory, sexist, homophobic, violent and looney–versus-- another thread that is comprised of free flowing political commentary and opinions–there will be a difference in the threads that has nothing to do with a lack of effort.

Here is an example that may help ease your unease.

If I just say,

The men who created the mythical character Jesus, wrote and attributed contradictory comments to him in the Bible.–or-- There are scriptures attributed to Moses (who allegedly talked to God), where he attributes instructions from God, that contradict God’s own word.

These claims need to come with an example or it is just an unsubstantiated claim. The best example a person can use is “The Actual Extant Scriptures of the Bible.”

Luke 23:46

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

John 19:30

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Exodus 20:13

Thou shalt not kill.

Exodus 32:26-27

26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’S side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.
