Indeed, you in fact, are also American.

Indeed. Which underpins the absurdity of a manicurist abroad on the proceeds of a lawsuit… #notallmanicurists.

People who use that “Coastal Elite” line seem to be referring to Brookline/Newton/Wellesley MA (wink wink nudge nudge). Or “New York intellectuals” who aren’t from New York and aren’t all that intellectual (winking and nudging intensifies).

I honestly think the only reason Ohio is a swing state is voter suppression in larger urban centers.

I’m going to semi-disagree with this statement, as a nondualist who believes that All is One. Yes, ridiculous and ignorant behavior should be chastised. It certainly does not have to be accepted, and in some forms, needs to be punished.

But OH MY LORD can we move being the whole “picking sides” thing? I guess it’s the way of things, but it does not hasten a smooth resolution to these types of deep issues. Forgiveness – especially for those who on the surface appear least deserving of it. It’s a GOOD thing. It is NOT the same as acceptance. Not hate for the hateful is… still hate.

Sorry.

Side note: In much of the predominately Spanish and Portuguese speaking world, Estadounidense tends to be used in more formal contexts, while Americana and Americano tend to be more common in less formal contexts. Likewise, Nortamericana, Nortamericano, Afronortamericana, and so forth. I suppose you could use Americana and Americano in the US. It could potentially be slightly confusing since Americana is already in use to describe cultural artifacts associated with the United States, but if the reader or listener is aware of the context in which it’s being used, it should work.

Personally, I just use the term American. In my purely anecdotal experience, most of the people I’ve met who use terms such as USian, USonian, ect… seem to be people born in the US (with the obvious caveat that the internet is international and where people are located is often not apparent, which is fine). It doesn’t offend me. None of these are derogatory, save the Ugly American stereotype, and even in that case there’s an argument that it’s punching up and thus, while crass, less harmful than other examples of xenophobia.

Just my tuppence.

As an American, I am disappoint that the rest of the world just gives us the name without much more than a shrug. I was much more satisfied thinking we had stolen it. Kind of like being the first to call shotgun on the way to the car.

Intriguing idea. What have you yourself done to break free that way?

Well duh! I started reading the boingboing ‘zine as an impressionable teen! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I highly recommend a study of Advaita Vedanta, information theory, and quantum physics as a sure-fire way to “break free” and remember the ultimate truth that All is One (or “god” if you want to call it that), and it consists of everything that is, that’s ever been, and will ever be, and you, me, all of us, and everything else in the multiverse are part of it, and can access this universal truth directly, and without having to rely on faith alone. It does take work, however! The reward, let me assure you, is weeeelllllll worth the journey. One might say, that journey IS the whole point of it all…

North America uses the metric system? Well, Canada and Mexico do, anyway.

I can’t really say that I blame them.

But as I like to cite my favorite Gary Larson comic:

I think someone ‘unscrewed that lid’, and the jerks outnumber us all; no matter what we may look like, what language we speak or what country we live in.

Learn if you are in a stop and identify state.

IIRC this is in Mass? Not a stop and identify state

Victim shouldn’t have to give up passport imo

Yes, as the cop in the video acknowledges, iirc.

Yes, this is totally juvenile, but it’s kinda funny on that map what Missouri-Arkansas-Louisiana look like they are going to do to Alabama-Georgia-Florida…

Now you mention it, the lid falling off and “over-seasoning” the world with jerks is a visual I’ll forever see when I look at that comic. :smirk:
