I think the “rarely seen” refers to the gallery on the Tolkien estate website (which is not clearly linked). The ones on the first site linked are indeed well known to anyone who has been reading Tolkiens for a few decades, but there’s a lot of stuff on the estate website that is completely new to me. Where did he find the time to do such excellent art, write, and teach?

In those days there was no internet. You had to write classic novels, create religions, discover electricity, and invent physics just to fill the time

Tolkien should have made The Hobbit and LOTR graphic novels. Probably cut the page count in half
