Milli Vanilli’s producer, Frank Farian, did this habitually, both before and after MV, starting with Boney M.

Far from the only one. Once multitracking became a thing it’s always going to be tempting for a producer.

Also Boney M are great.

Yeah, I think it was common in the late 70s (and of course the Wrecking Crew were doing the same thing on the instrumental side long before that). The level of surprise with Milli Vanilli (and later with Black Box) was probably unwarranted.

Boney M. was not a supergroup in the US. I liked them once I discovered them, but rather less once I found out that Bobby Farrell was just lip-syncing Farian.
