I never quite understood the bile aimed at these guys. Were they not just another manufactured band and everyone knew it?

There’s “manufactured” and there’s “didn’t sing on their own albums (but claimed attribution).”

When questions started being raised, they demanded of their manager that they be allowed to sing on their next album. He fired them.

So maybe the manager was the driving force behind the deception but they were at least initially complicit.
