NPR did a story on higher energy density propulsion using a nuclear reactor to heat and discharge hydrogen gas. One of the assurances by Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation is that: “the nuclear rocket wouldn’t fire until astronauts were far from the Earth”. This reminded me of the discussion of the flaws of the fictitious Queller drive used in early intersteller exploration in the Space 1999 TV series. Use of the drive killed millions in a distant planetary system due to its use of fast neutron emissions.
