I hope these writers who commented on the Columbus statue in Philly will continue to make their voices heard as the city decides what to do with it:
It followed this:
From that article:
In the eastern city of Harar, protesters have pulled down a statue of a royal prince - Ras Makonnen Wolde Mikael - who was the father of Haile Selassie, Ethiopia’s last emperor. The statue shows Ras Makonnen, an important military figure and former governor of Harar province in the 19th Century under then-Emperor Menelik II, sitting on a horse. In a recent interview with local TV station Oromia Media Network, Hachalu had said that people should remember that all the horses seen mounted by old leaders belonged to the people.
My wife was surprised that any statue associated with the old ruling dynasty had survived the Derg era, much less into the 21st century.
The Trump campaign is assuring his supporters that he won’t let the scary BLM protesters rip down the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro (which would be quite a feat since the thing is 125 feet tall and weighs 635 metric tons).
Smart money is on the theory that they just Googled “Jesus Statue” and grabbed the first one that popped up.

Jackson City Council Votes to Remove Andrew Jackson Monument From City Hall and Put It Somewhere…Less Racist?
Robert A. Millikan, a crucial figure in Caltech’s past, was also a white supremacist and an eugenics supporter. A petition is being circulated to remove his bust and his name from campus. You can sign it here: https://bit.ly/2AgRlWg
Oh Bristol, Bristol, Bristol…
Of course they did.
Maybe the statue could be replaced with something representative of the Belgian occupation of Congo. Like a statue of a pile of one million severed hands.
Forgive me if this isn’t quite the place. Maybe white culture would be more appropriate? But anyway in the UK the National Trust looks after heritage sites. They recently started addressing their history with particular regard to enslaving and profiting. Unsurprisingly this led to objections from erstwhile history enthusiasts, you know the kind. The kind that like their history to celebrate slavers, looters, rapists, and genocidaires…
