This is kinda like a true story some friends told me. The wife (who was not born in America) discovered the husband was writing monthly student loan checks to Fannie Mae. Not knowing what that was, she thought it was some kind of hush money for an affair and confronted the husband about it. After explaining he said, “good thing it wasn’t Freddie Mac.”

And yet utterly failed at garnering the support of other Democrats. His 2000 run for President as a Reform Party candidate collapsed so quickly that even he apparently forgot about it.
When he realized he needed to align himself with a political party willing to tolerate and even celebrate his racism and misogyny and corruption there was really only one way to go.

He was able to get many photo ops with the Clintons because he supported them. That’s not the same thing as saying himself had the party’s support.

Absolutely! I don’t think the Democrats ever trusted him; hell, I don’t think most New Yorkers ever trusted him. The guy’s political views flip flopped around so much that it was pretty obvious he ‘believed’ whatever made sense financially. It’s just bizarre to see so many photos of him palling around with people that he now speaks of as if they’re satan incarnate.
