Sounds like residents proudly display their KKK affiliation, and the sign at the edge of town is still there.
The one I was specifically referencing, just outside the town of Rising Sun Maryland, was not an adopt-a-highway sign. It was a cliched but fairly straight up death threat.
I don’t think I can post what it said due to the filter on certain words here.
They used to burn 30-foot crosses on the edge of town, too, and reportedly everybody came out and cheered. It’s simply not like that today. Reverend King did not die in vain, and an adopt-a-highway sign is not the same as social acceptance of the KKK, it’s just fair treatment of a bunch of people who don’t really deserve it.
I drove through a couple weeks ago and there aren’t even any ten-foot-tall confederate flags any more.
Leave it to the Klan to take a beautiful symbol of how our Lord and Savior was brutally tortured to death and turn it into something sinister.
Could it be summarized as “Don’t let the sun set on you here?” Ironic, given the name of the town.
Somebody needs to produce a single of this – my choice would be Bad Religion or Flogging Molly, but anyone who hits top 40 Pop or decent YouTube stats would do. It looks like it’s straight 4/4, and folk dirties up just fine. And I’m sure the Guthrie family would be happy to take the nickel.
Pegged it in one! I think the irony was intentional, but perhaps I am ascribing too much intelligence to the people involved.
