RIP Michael Collins, "Third Man" of the first Moon landing

It must have been an amazing ride for Collins. He orbited the moon thirty times, alone, while awaiting the return of Armstrong/Aldrin.

NB his memoir, “Carrying the Fire,” is well worth a read if you’re interested in the history of the Apollo program. (and it pains me to us the phrase “History of the Apollo program” because of course when I was a kid, it was the future happening today.)

I don’t know. The folks on the night and far sides may have felt like every poor slob who got blocked out by someone else in a group photo.

To say nothing of how ever many people were born after the pic was snapped.

(And died before, but trying not to be grim and also, ship of Theseus stuff.)
