The big cities in Japan make it easy to forget that most of the land is forest land. Bear attacks happen a few times a year in northern Japan, where you can also find the occasional restaurant that serves bear meat.
Shiretoko National Park in Hokkaido is famous for its bears, and visitors there will often carry bear spray.
