I must go. My people need me.
If you would have to write a rule to stop this behavior, that would probably be the best way to go about it. The first foot to touch behind the line wins.
I don’t think you should though, why would you? The race is about being the first over the line, he was first over the line right?
Some people may feel like it’s unfair, because the other person won’t risk the scrapes and do the same or even that it’s unsafe because someone could get injured.
But that is at the basis of almost all competitive sport right? Seeing which people are willing to suffer the most to do one thing very well. The highest level of competitive sports aren’t fun, it’s not healthy. But in order win you have to work for it more then the next guy/girl.
Sure we disallowed doping and may think of a rule to ban this but what is next? Enforcing athletes have a healthy work life schedule? Forbidding them to run a race when you suspect they may have slight injury that could get worse if they are allowed to run?
And even then it is only in the opinion of the judge (so slow mo cannot be used to disqualify)
… in racing history!
BTW: His name is the greatest I’ve ever heard.
There is. It’s the torso. That includes shoulders but not arms. The standard technique is to lean way forward just before crossing the finish line to put your chest and shoulders ahead of your body. This also serves to provide a last bit of acceleration as your body weight moves forward and you “fall.” Most runners catch themselves, but it’s not uncommon to see runners stumble and fall in the 10 meters post finish as part of the “dip” at the line.
I just watched her 800 m win in one of the diamond league races. She’s amazing, and what IAAF is doing is just plain wrong. They are invalidating her as a person, not just as an athlete
Ultimately, the controversy may be moot. Women’s times are improving faster than men’s times. If the trend continues, women will catch up with men in some events in the next 50 years.
- Both athletes have the option to leap, and know it. It has won (and failed to win) medals many times before
- It doesn’t affect the other athlete.
There is no reasonable way to interpret it as cheating.
So basically whoever’s SHIRT crosses the finish line first wins
OR, think of a pair of imaginary backpack straps
Is that what kids are calling it these days?
No. The “spirit of the event and competition” has been built from centuries of tradition and has led to the rules as they currently exist, in which Infinite Tucker’s finish was perfectly legal.
If’ you’d like to invent a new sport that’s Track and Field adjacent but with different rules and different traditions, no one is stopping you.
It’s more like the torso of a store mannequin. Hypothetically, the shorts also count, but not any, um, appendages in that region.
I can imagine somebody somewhere running pelvis-first, but not winning a race that way
They should change the key body part for each race. In fact, they shouldn’t even tell the runners until right before it starts. “OK fellas, today it’s the LEFT ELBOW”
That seems a little Hokey, and I think that race would end up Pokey.
I am, thanks!
That’s the opposite of my point. To accurately reflect my point, and what I’ve understood is yours, the metaphorical poker conversation would go more like:
Duke: “Three aces beats three 2s, so Infinite Tucker wins.”
Declan: “But it’s Tuesday, so three 2s win. Aces can’t win on a Tuesday, that is against the spirit of the event and competition.”
Duke: “That’s not in the rules of poker. By the rules of poker, aces are a higher card than 2s, so three aces beats three 2s.”
Declan: “We should change that rule. And you’re no fun!”
Duke: “…”
No one is forcing you to run or watch Track and Field. As I mentioned above, if you’d like to change the rules, you can petition the IAAF or USATF or any other governing body; or you can invent a new sport with your rules and try to get people to join you. New sports are invented all the time and some take off to become quite popular.
While Track and Field is so approachable that children can easily participate and be a part of the sport, the competition that Infinite Tucker won was a major intercollegiate conference championship and the participants are scholarship athletes. They put a great deal of effort and time into their sport. In the SEC, many of the athletes are world-class and could compete as professionals except they want to remain amateurs for NCAA status until they graduate.
The general sense I get from your posts in this thread is that you have a desire to piss on the sport of track and field. If that’s your goal, be prepared for others, myself included, to splash right back 'atcha.
