Ryanair says it "will not tolerate" in-flight racial abuse after tolerating it

Thanks, the comparison I was looking for was, “per passenger hour traveled”, it’s from 6 to 47 times more carbon intensive.

Plane travel seems cleaner since we get there faster, less wear and tear on us. If driving g or the train were the only option, I think people would just travel less.

It seems like these calculations are very complex. Here’s a summary discussion:

One of the long-term effects of climate change will likely be a reversion to the pre-war world, where pleasant and relatively quick long-distance travel was mainly the privilege of the wealthy.

I’d say correct metric fuel per passenger mile. Of course a 583 mph 737 uses more carbon per hour per passenger than a car, but it’s going much farther in that same time than a car.

But I do think you are right that less convenient travel would cut travel. I wouldn’t visit Europe if I had to take a boat there, or drive and take a boat there.

Per hour is a bogus comparison since a plane travels far further in an hour than a car. Proper comparison is per passenger mile. For city to city travel nothing beats electrified high speed rail on an emissions per passenger mile basis. For longer oceanic distance there isn’t really any alternative to air, although cruise ships are actually fairly efficient due to the number of people carried, but they are slow.

Or sockpuppet/reserve accounts of loser fail trollies who’ve been banned multiple times over the years.

come on, there are several bits that are out of character.

  1. RyanAir does not abuse either customer themselves.

  2. When a customer abuses another customer RyanAir does not inform the first customer that there is a 29 euro fee for abusing customers.

  3. They then continue this bizarre behavior by not selling the black lady some sort of anti-racist abuse insurance that would allow you to move seats automatically when racially abused.

Indeed, what a horribly vile old man, I sincerely hope he has no children.

I can fix this for you sir - here’s your parachute.

Pleasant landing.

That was exactly my first thought. I’d trade with her and take complete and utter delight in making his life a living hell for the entirety of the flight.

People make travel choices based on perceived convenience. Time spent in the air vs time spent on the road is very much a consideration. Planes perhaps break even if all else is equal, but days driving vs hours flying makes things very unequal. And how you’re treated while flying plays a role to. Once I was put on the SSSS list by the TSA, I stopped wanting to fly at all, ever. If this woman decides she’d rather not fly because of the bigots, that’s an environmental win.

At least with an electrified fast train, theres means to walk away from such a confrontation.

Once the reality of global warming hits, no one is going to travel as much as we do now.

Funny, I read that as “eternity of the flight” and thought it very clever. But it would be good to make it seem so.

The problem with pacifism in cases like this is that assholes like this guy take it as “I’m winning”.

A beatdown, or threat thereof may be the only thing his tiny little mind can understand.
And for those who’re going to say “you should only be violent in defense”, wouldn’t you say that this is somewhat traumatic for the elderly lady? There’s no place in a civilized society to tolerate shit like this.

You don’t try to talk a rabid dog into not biting you…

I get where you are coming from … but in situations like this, the direct approach is needed. Call him out on his racism and general assholery. Passive-aggressive should be reserved for one’s obnoxious blood relations … because they at least are going to get it.

It’s a tough call. You don’t want him to go unchecked, but if you do take a stand then you risk waking the airline employees and becoming THEIR target.

(On a personal note: Many asshole types are empowered and even encouraged by pacifists who go out of their way to avoid conflict. I have taken a lot of recent damage, both professionally and personally, thanks to assholes who blamed ME for getting angry AFTER tolerating things that they would never have allowed.)

(Personally, I would probably find some passive-agressive way to positively ruin the rest of his day and/or week. Hit me with an attitude and I’ll fire it right back, amplified. Speaking as a white man, I would have given Archie Bunker there just enough time to touch me before demanding his arrest and/or isolation for assault. I don’t know if Ryanair listens to its customers, but I’ll bet their bean counters listen to promises of legal action. Because of her skin color and gender, however, that woman may not have had that option, at least not easily.)

I say just escort the miserable shit to a nice, isolated, caged seat in the luggage compartment.

Let him pay for her flight, which he was so eager to ruin, AND compensate her for trauma.

There was a definitely a vacuum of leadership in this situation but we’re all programmed to be submissive slaves if we choose to fly. The security theater of removing your shoes, the utter humiliation and debasement of treating everyone as a terrorist is an Orwellian dream come true.

In my fantasy the plane could have erupted in song, and laughter singing “Jimmy Crack Corn” and relocated him to seat near the lav. when he uses the can, he gets sucked into midair disposal jettison

that’s terrible, we’ll give him a parachute
but there might be holes

Big ships are very dirty because they burn low quality fuel. If you could run them off photovoltaics it would be a different matter.

It’s weird to hear an ignorant racist with a British accent. I think we are used to American ones - usually with a colloquial accent of some sort.

They won’t “tolerate” it, but they will take the money and run, right?

I noticed they were busy boasting in their profits call today that they are better hedged than their rivals for upcoming currency problems, fuel rises, etc. which makes a change. A couple of downturns ago they pissed away hundreds of peoples’ jobs by refusing to hedge…

A violent response would only serve to get yourself kicked off. How about sitting beside him and silently staring at him for the entire flight?

That should be suitably unnerving. You can always punch him later when you’ve arrived at your destination.
