Sasha Baron Cohen in disguise triggers racist townsfolk with plans for giant mosque

His timing and delivery can be pretty genius sometimes. His interview (as Ali G) of Buzz Aldrin was funny without being mean and had a great example of his setup and delivery

“Me know you’s been asked this like a zillion times…but let’s just sort it out. What do you say to all those conspiracy theorists who come up to you and say: does the moon… really exist?”

His greatest genius isn’t his ability to annoy people or make innocent folks look stupid, it’s his talent for giving horrible people exactly the right amount of rope to hang themselves.

Still not my cup of tea.

I do note that people of a higher caliber like Aldrin and Bernie Sanders didn’t get sucked into the prank; like, say, Roy Moore, or that one guy who was only too happy to start shouting “nïgger” at the slightest prompting.

He makes it look so easy. Basically just ask them to be horrible and bam, instant viral video clip.

Right? If I wanted to get someone to yell “I am TOO a racist!” or scream the n-word or bite a dildo on national television I wouldn’t even know where to start.

Cohen demonstrates that, with some people, most of the time you just have to ask them.

His brand of comedy is definitely not everybody’s cup of tea, it’s hard to deny how much of an improvisational genius he is. His ability to fully engross himself into a persona, adapt to situations on the fly, and never break character is a pretty amazing talent. That’s not something that many people can do.

Even for me as someone that’s a fan, I find myself really enjoying some of his characters while intensely disliking others. I think it also depends on the situation. Some of his material can be just mean spirited, while others are very revealing. I was always a big fan of Ali G and other than often exasperating his interview subjects, I don’t recall anything done in that character being particularly mean spirited. A lot of the Borat material on the other hand I felt was in very poor taste.

He’s very good at character acting; I’m not denying that.

I just don’t find it funny, and never have. Not Borat, not Ali G, not Bruno… none of it.

But as long as he keeps showing just how ‘garbage’ some of these garbage-ass people are, I have no issue with him; his comedy serves a useful purpose, even if I never laugh…

FWIW, I tend to agree with you. Not my thing, really.

I’d say that Mark Thomas is a braver activist-comedian, not that Sasha Baron Cohen isn’t brave.

Aye.

I’m not trying to knock his game; Cohen just doesn’t make me laugh.

Weird how some people keep trying to explain that he is fine, none the less, as if it’s some sort of objective metric…

Yeah, almost like I’m not allowed to have my own tastes and preferences, or something.

I wonder why that would be?

I’m just ‘lucky,’ I guess.

Yeah, totally agree with you on this. I don’t find his stuff funny, either. But boy, is it hella enlightening about us as human beings and how we treat others.
