No, that’s not why men don’t get called out on their clothing. People pay far more attention to women’s physical appearances then men.
Caution: generalizations ahead!
Men: Except for ties, there’s very few fashion games in men’s Sunday Best clothes. In fact, guys could generally wear the same thing to church, a wedding, a funeral, work, court, and so on. Dark suit off the rack and done. Same outfit can be used for years or decades. Yeah, there are price and quality levels, but those are secondary and frequently ignored. Unless it has holes in it or is some ridiculously expensive brand, few people notice or care.
Women: So many options, each with meaning. Style, color, shoe choice, accessories. Talking about it is self perpetuating. What a woman wears often has meaning, because we talk about it, because it often has meaning, …
It’s totally unfair. But on one level, I do blame women politicians for their own predicament. Think of all the times a woman politician has worn color. It was probably not an accident and was meant to make a statement. Unfortunately, that just perpetuates the problem clothes choice having meaning. It’s expanded a battleground for women that is much more neutral territory for guys.
Have you not seen the numerous articles about how Paul Ryan’s suits are too big?
It literally DOES NOT MATTER what a woman in the public eye wears or how she looks - she is going to get criticism, because we’re constantly judged on our appearances. Period. WE ARE JUDGED ON OUR LOOKS.
And in the UK the only time male political dress is commented on, is (as per most female dress comment) also to distract, demean, demonise and denigrate.
Did Senator Warren’s heritage ever really matter? No. Every point that conservatives try to make about her heritage is based on dishonestly twisting a minor detail into a huge issue to portray her as dishonest.
Same thing here: they’ve been trying from day one to portray Ocasio-Cortez as dishonest, while being dishonest themselves. That’s what they do. The Grand Old Party is really the Grand Troll Party. Facts don’t matter to them, getting a rise out of liberals and feeding red meat to their supporters matters.
But no pockets or other actually practical features.
Most women’s attire has historically been designed by men, based upon what they personally find physically appealing:
No, no… silly lady! It’s all our faults, because of the choices we make! Men have NOTHING to do with it! /s
I’m not suggesting there was nothing misogynistic about this, only that we need to be careful about not being too partisan in what are and are not reasonable questions. I feel fairly sure that if the same comments were being made of a republican that we would both be able to point out the differences in how women are treated while also respecting that there are questions that might be reasonable to ask about expenses vs. positioning.
No… they only have most of the power, most of the resources, and make most of the laws that affect us all; it’s still totally on women though, for not sewing our own clothing from scratch if we have such a problem with what commercial clothes makers are willing to sell us.
Except this is the exact outfit that Ocasio-Cortez is wearing, and everybody is freaking out about it.
Partisan? You do realize misogyny isn’t a partisan issue, yeah? Women across the political spectrum face harassment and dismissive behavior in their professional lives. It’s happened to every single one of us. All of us at one time or another in our lives.
I wouldn’t, even if it was a woman whose politics I completely disagree with.
I mean, we shouldn’t dress too nice/not nice enough, too sexy/not sexy enough, too professional/not professional enough, and people would just treat us with the exact same respect as men, right? /s
Because she’s a woman, and our physical appearance matters more than anything else. Plus she’s not wearing a tattered sack cloth, so that obviously means she’s lying about not being rich.

All these people who can allegedly tell the difference between a cheap dark gray suit and an expensive dark gray suit, I have to wonder, don’t they have anything better to do with their brain cells?
I’d be down with the cage crinoline if I could add some spikes to the outside. I like my personal space.
Edit: Also, if I were as slim as AOC appears to be, I could buy a suit like that off Amazon right now for under $50 (the Asian sizing is the issue).

To be fair, personally I can tell the difference by physically touching the fabric… but not by just looking at a photo.
That said, what someone wears to cover their naked body should be the least of our considerations given the state of the entire world right now.
Talk about petty and materialistic.
There is a historical precedent for obsessing over clothes this way, namely Nixon’s “Checkers” speech and the references there to Pat’s cloth coat. Despite being from 66 years ago, this is all somehow fresh in Republican minds as being a key hallmark of wealth or lack thereof.
Me, I’d like all legislators, of whatever gender, to wear orange jumpsuits to work, as a constant reminder of what can should happen if they engage in shenanigans.
Funny how everyone here is getting so involved in the clothing discussion when there are serious things to be discussing like Medicare for everyone, ending the student debt catastrophe, justice reform, ending global warming. Just shows how well this dirty tricks tactic works. The appearance comments are designed to undermine women and change the conversation. We all need to train ourselves to stop wasting time and energy on these Trumped up ‘controversies’ which are simply nothing more than diversions. If you support Ocasio-Cortez, start spending time working on real issues.

Captain Obvious moment; by taking the time to lecture the community on this topic, you’re also feeding into it.
Yes; we obviously have way more important things to worry about. That will not stop those in power from trying to distract us and muddy the waters.
