Should you point utensils up or down in the dishwasher?

We had a dishwasher that was really a post-hand-washing sanitization machine. Everything had to be cleaned ahead of time. We had it for so long, and it’s so ingrained, that I have had a really hard time breaking myself of the habit of pre-washing things.

Every dishwasher that i’ve had have been lousy. When i see those articles talking about how you don’t need to wash or scrub dishes mostly clean before putting in the dishwasher as a water saving method i laugh because when i do that all the grease and grime just gets baked into the dishes. Granted i rent so the dishwashers that i’ve had have always been subpar.

I’m reasonably sure this whole “you don’t need to rinse” thing is predicated on running the dishwasher immediately after dinner and assume you made no breakfast/lunch dishes. We don’t like running a mostly empty dishwasher, so we rinse/scrub before loading.

In my experience, no.

Vertical with the end to the left, but that’s due to the positioning of it - in front of the sitter on the right, in my case. If it were positioned on the left, I’d have the end to the right.

I find that helps it unroll with less inadvertent tearing, cuz physics or something.

You do know you’ve opened up a whole new endless argument, right?

Just to fan the flames, I’ll note that from what I’ve read, many cats are left-pawed.

I’ve had no problem with warping of wood or bamboo chopsticks in the dishwasher.

It’s never a for sure thing but it can happen, other thing that can occur is that sometimes the wood can dry out. I have a wood chopping board i sometimes throw in the dishwasher and afterwards i just make sure to wipe some food grade mineral oil on it before putting it away.

I only have a few sets of chopsticks I will put in the dishwasher - ones with a wide enough end that they won’t go through the utensil basket grid. They are a nice dark hardwood with very straight grain and I think they’ll outlast most of my forks.

Likewise, I have some hickory-handled steak knives that I refinished myself that I don’t hesitate to run through the dishwasher…points down, of course!
