The capacity to be a monster, at least in specific circumstances, is more common than we suppose. It may be universal. I am coming to believe that child abuse and child abusers are far more common than generally acknowledged.

The desire to give in to peer pressure is close to universal. It’s why most (if not all) of these cults want you to cut off contact with the outside world until you have been ‘saved’ (read: abused and brainwashed), if they didn’t then they would lose their power over their victims.
You need a lot fewer actual sociopaths in this scenario and get a similar amount of damage.
