I think it’s more a 1909 version of the story of Orpheus, myself. Though I think there are various references to fashion panics of the past - e.g. the slightly archaic top hat, the 18th century powdered face, his shoes with what appear to be Poulaine toes - which as far as I know fell out of favor in the 15th century and nothing similar appeared in the 20th until the '50s (in a much subdued version). (Either that, or they’re using archaic fashion to construct some imaginary, future ridiculous fashion.)
