A similar analogy I have noted, wampum and other beading art, is basically pixel art way before the first computer was dreamed of.

Yes but traditional beading is much older than mechanical looms like that. But definitely rug making and other weaving is also similar to pixel art.

Fun fact - my first job out of college was for a small webdesign company whose offices were in this other company’s space. They imported and embroidered hats. One day they were throwing out a bunch of old stuff, including these odd paper tape rolls with holes punched into it. They said it was a pattern for an old embroidery machine. I saved one, though I am not sure it is still around here or not…
