Slack is back: "J.R. 'Bob' Dobbs and the Church of the SubGenius" trailer drops

Clearly, the only way to resolve this heresy, is by a dance-off!

Just a side-note: The character set in the Atari ST family had four characters that, when lined up properly, showed Bob. It was wondering who this was that led me to the CotSG.

Still, I dislike the general nudging towards the idea that the world must be built for simpletons and morons and everyone else has to dumb down for them. I feel like the zeitgeist is returning to the 50s 60s and 70s, when tv music and movies generally had to be safe for everyone from ages 3 and up, only it’s for irony instead of nudity and language. I don’t want the internet to go that way. As it is here the constant /s tags ruin the actual sarcasm. Little pitchers have big ears but in the end the adults should be allowed to have adult conversations.

That Vonnegut quote always bugs me. I think there’s a kernel of truth but it relates more specifically to “take care not to enjoy playing the villain a little too much”, or that the longer a behavior continues the easier it becomes so be careful behaving in ways opposite to your true self. The way it’s usually used strikes me as the same as the anti-video game/anti-porn argument; give people a little credit for being able to distinguish between fantasy and reality. “We are what we pretend to be” is a completely pulled-out-his-ass assertion. Most people are perfectly capable of pretending without becoming someone else.

Yeah but nobody gets tell you what your slack is going to be. You get to decide that and if you decide to take the path of THE Conspiracy then you were going to do that anyways and now The Church is $30 richer for it.

Sarah Cooper says she has gotten legitimate fan mail from Trumpers. They seem to be under the impression she is spreading The Good Word of Our President.

So this is still a thing and will be for whoever is next.

It’s my actual religion.

It forces me to accept all other belief systems as equally true. If someone believes Spiderman is real, then Spiderman is just as real as “Bob” or Jehovah 1.

As a proof of my chosen faith. All of my browser bookmarks related to the Church of the SubGenius are tagged as “religion”.

Good for you.

This is a documentary about the CotS by its founder emphasizing that it was meant as a joke from the beginning. Odds are it will do more good than harm.

My only encounter was when they provided color commentary for the power tool drag races. It was not a drag.

Because to flab it down to min IQ comprehension is to acquiesce to the moronic plague of humorless, hypersensitive boringness. I’ll never be a fan of anything that excites hatred. I’ll always be a fan of goofy, participatory shit that makes people think, if they care to.

Do Tarantino movies incite actual violence? Probably some whackadoo bolt-neck has taken that satire too far, but they could have watched Bruce Lee or The Saw or Cinderella for that matter, and done the same.

If I rummage around, I could probably find a clearer line where satire crosses into incitement. I don’t know where that line is generally. I’m sure it’s different for different people. I know where it is for me personally: wayyyyyyyyy the fuck over there… Like so far away, I can’t even see it. On this side of that line is all this campy crap like Subgenius, FSM, Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Monty Python, stupid edgy comedy, Colbert, Mummenchantz, Cirque de Soleil and Gallagher.

I don’t wish to live in a world where all we have is state sanctioned humorists. That’d be like living in V for Vendetta, and fuck that shit.

“Bob” works in mysterious ways!

Not in method acting. Meanwhile, when we Yanks travel out of the US, well-dressed and acting polite, and are mistaken for Canadians, are we only performing, or have we mutated?

I find it to be a good case study to also understand how so many people are suckered into believing Qannon crackpot theories. Qannon is more dangerous, but I think the hardwired drive for people to associate with such groups are similar.

Alex Jones always says he’s just an entertainer. So does Rush Limbaugh, actually. They get money by stirring the pot. There’s an audience panting for salacious conservative crazy-mongering, so they deliver it. Do they believe the garbage they spew out? Probably not. But that doesn’t really matter at this point, because it’s their brand.

The quote from Vonnegut is that Howard W. Campbell isn’t really a Nazi, he was an American patriot working within Nazi Germany to defeat it. But of course, he said all those pro-Nazi things on the radio, so… he has an audience now. It doesn’t matter that he was pretending to be a Nazi, you are what you pretend to be.

I did notice that getting through customs to X-Day went a lot smoother when I plainly announced that I was heading to a yearly religious retreat. Bam! The whole line of questioning stopped right there.

As I understand it, “Bob” was simply looking at the dates upside-down.

Unfortunately, the way things are going, we won’t be making it anywhere near 8661 CE.

But then again, who’s to say the calendar we currently use is even correct???
