Ya know that one thing leads to another, so eventually when they build a cubist hotel it’s really gonna freaking hurt!
There are a lot of ‘experiental hotels’ that essentially turn your overnight stay into performance art:
~~the Japanese business hotel that will let you stay for $1 per night if you agree to be livecammed
~~the TWA Hotel that refurbed the old TWA terminal at JFK
~~the Library Hotel in NYC, with themed suites. The same company has variants around NYC and internationally
~~ the Queen Mary in Long Beach
Cool! I’ll be there next weekend.
Not the overnight room but, to see the show. I look forward to it.
You might be able to, or at least get very close.
There is a diner nearby here that has a corner window with a view of vinyl bar stools similar to Hopper’s iconic painting. It’s claim to fame is that it’s a dive waffle house but, the signage was misspelled on it’s awnings as “Wafle Shop”. Maybe to save on price per letter? Who knows?
Cool idea! Love it when museums leap over the fence from curating to creating…
Great job VMFA!
I spent a night in the Salvador Dali suite and it was terrible. The gravity never seemed to work right, there were Bengal Tigers in the pomegranate I got from room service and I ended up oversleeping because my alarm clock had melted.
They’ve had some great shows lately. Rodin, Picasso, etc. Since DC museums have basically dried up and shriveled away, VMFA is where it’s at for the East Coast part of the country.
(Many shows there are brought to you by such folks as Altria (Philipp Morris) or the Sacklers (see Oxycontin), so be mindful of who you are supporting. The Hopper exhibit is being brought to you by The Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Exhibition Endowment The Julia Louise Reynolds Fund)
Cool stuff.
Hard to pinpoint how much I love Hopper. It’s his lesser known works that always moved me most.

/Rodan’s got nothing on this thinker
// unless you mean flying Rodan
/// He got clobbere. Ask Mothra.
Also from a few years back:
Not a great movie but if you like “real life” Hopper…
I hear it only costs $1 if you let them livestream you.
I’ve always liked “Automat” (which weirdly doesn’t show any of the automat equipment; the sad girl could be in an entirely manual establishment). But I know that Hopper hated technology so I doubt the name of the painting is coincidental.
Wake me up when they build some full sized MC Escher sets…
The title adds context. It suggests that the lonely girl likely won’t have any human contact all evening—even if only a server to take her order.
WIKI (Location of the Restaurant) infers Manhattan as the location… but I suggest reading the Wiki entry.
