SNL fires comic Shane Gillis days after hiring him

Didn’t say that I would do it. I’m asking and answering two questions:

(1) Can boingers recognize the difference between untalented racist jibes and a clever movie parody?
(2) If a studio got a bunch of complaints accusing a clever movie parody of fostering racist stereotypes, would they fold?

To which the answers are

(1) Of course they can.
(2) Like a freshly-ironed handkerchief.

They greenlight stuff with racist stereotypes with pretty standard frequency. When they have the money invested, they don’t pull projects that meet with opposition. They don’t usually fold. The Ridiculous Six exists, and countless others like it.

Anyone who appreciates SNL as a whole, and their decision to turf Shane Gillis, still has to admit they’re not usually the foremost champions of diversity over their entire history. They have great moments, but they’ve never been completely consistent about it.

They’re more likely to fold over accusations they’re not giving Trump his due, and then letting him host, or directly apologizing to Dan Crenshaw for the “boundary-pushing” bad jokes that other people don’t get apologies for.
