South Carolina proposes law to block porn on computers bought in the state

Apparently you’ve never seen ascii boob art. Actually, I envy you. It’s terrible.

Or, even better(!), what’s the software they’re running to actualize the blocking? How long until that company/software is popped and the fine folks in SC are hung out to dry by this nonsense?

Most folks don’t have a genuine copy of Windows, just the ISO that comes on their backup partition. Reload it and your porn blocker returns. As far as the nitty gritty of porn I’ll stay as far away from that as possible.

Dickens couldn’t have come up with a better name than Chumley for this reactionary blobfish of a man.

Splitting hairs is what really gets me going!

The bill would fine manufacturers that sell a device without the blocking system, but they could opt out by paying $20 per device sold.

Simple solution… stop selling computers to South Carolina, they apparently can’t handle them.

What is to stop an in-state system builder from including two ISO restore images for a stock Windows+drivers image, in addition to the Windows+drivers+shovel ware (with install sub-menu)+porn filter (with install sub-menu.)

I wonder if Rep. Chunky is filtering out his email from Ms. Streisand… For instance, South Carolina tends to run higher-than-natl-average gay porn searches, with preference for category Big Black Dicks, according to PornHub traffic numbers.

(If you want a good time…visit PornHub’s analytics section; many great articles – AFAIK all are SFW – like the one about how iPhone traffic fell dramatically during the iPhone 7 keynote and then surged above normal as soon as the show was over. Or the several posts on the horse race in Trump searches :::spoiler: Don has the lead, but Tiffany is the leading challenger::: ; -)

Oh dear. Thanks for reminding me, though I sincerely doubt ASCII boob art qualifies as porn.

Hmmmmm … I wonder if such a filter could be adapted to block politicians

Conservatives are against government regulations, unless they dictate what you can do with your own body—then all that strict constructionist stuff goes out the window.

This pathetic waste of oxygen is unlikely to have any ideas about the details; but it wouldn’t be entirely safe to assume that the implementation would be so comical as to be useless.

UEFI can do a significant amount under the hood, regardless of the OS running on top of it(or even a lack of OS); systems with ‘vPro’ or equivalent can do even more; and most contemporary motherboard firmware is cryptographically signed by the vendor; and can only be tampered with in specific cases of incompetent implementation.

Yes, it’s not implausible that this glorious plan would end up achieving nothing more than having whatever ‘net nanny’ censorware is cheapest preloaded; and trivially vulnerable to uninstallation or OS wipe; but, at least optionally, the PC platform is way, way amenable to fairly serious lockdown than it used to be.

Government small enough to fit in your bedroom! Nothing contradictory about that, no sir!

Wife: What? Why go all that way - what’s wrong with the Best Buy right here.
Guy: Um.

Wasn’t porn responsible for the rapid expansion of the internet?
