That is a truly fascinating read. Our human instinct to deny cognition and sentience to other creatures is a damning trait. There are many alien intelligences on our planet that may be damn near on our level, but we made a leap to technology they have not. That is both a tiny thing and a huge thing.

There was a fascinating (and sad) documentary or chapter of a series on planet earth a few years ago about how climate change has opened an area to access by orcas that had previously been exclusive to pilot whales. Result: the orcas exploited their newfound advantage by corralling and killing off nearly all of the pilot whales.
