Speaker nominee Mike Johnson's MAGA Logic: "Roe v. Wade toppled over the economy"

So much for the idea that there are responsible Republicans in the House. Not that any of us here are surprised.

I think we can count on a gov shut down and no additional congressional funding for Israel or Ukraine now.

What comes after is going to be an effing nightmare.

…and he just made it past the 217 vote threshold.

Israel funding, if segregated away from Ukraine funding, would easily pass both houses. The issue is that Biden is trying to get funding for Ukraine and Taiwan approved with the Israel funding. He’s assuming the pro-Israel rapture desiring urges of the MAGA base in the House will overcome their reluctance to fund anything more for Ukraine. I’m not sure he’s right on his political calculations. These folks (MAGAts in the House) love to bray about “clean” bills, so you may be right in that they’ll refuse to move anything that isn’t just clean funding for Israel with nothing else attatched.

Well, it was a plot element, worked in for humor, in The Truth by Sir Terry Pratchett:

“Two dwarfs getting married each buy the other dwarf off their parents.”
Buy?” said William. “How can you buy people?”
“See? Cultural misunderstanding once again, lad. It costs a lot of money to raise a young dwarf to marriageable age. Food, clothes, chain mail… it all adds up over the years. It needs repaying. After all, the other dwarf is getting a valuable commodity. And it has to be paid for in gold. That’s traditional. Or gems. They’re fine, too. You must’ve heard our saying ‘worth his weight in gold’? Of course, if a dwarf’s been working for his parents, that gets taken into account on the other side of the ledger. Why, a dwarf who’s left off marrying till late in life is probably owed quite a tidy sum in wages – You’re still looking at me in that funny way…”
“It’s just that we don’t do it like that…” mumbled William.
Goodmountain gave him a sharp look.
“Don’t you, now?” he said. “Really? What do you use instead, then?”
“Er… gratitude, I suppose,” said William. He wanted this conversation to stop, right now. It was heading out over thin ice.
“And how’s that calculated?”
“Well… it isn’t, as such…”
“Doesn’t that cause problems?”
“Sometimes.”
“Ah. Well, we know about gratitude, too. but our way means the couple start their new lives in a state of… g’daraka… er, free, unencumbered, new dwarfs. Then their parents might well give them a huge wedding present, much bigger than the dowry. But it is between dwarf and dwarf, out of love and respect, not between debtor and creditor… though I have to say these human words are not really the best way of describing it. It works for us. It has worked for a thousand years.”
“I suppose to a human it sounds a bit… chilly,” said William.
Goodmountain gave him another studied look.
“You mean by comparison to the warm and wonderful ways humans conduct their affairs?” he said. “You don’t have to answer that one. Anyway, me and Boddony want to open up a mine together, and we’re expensive dwarfs. We know how to work lead, so we thought a year or two of this would see us right.”

I think his calculus is right on. If they won’t support Ukraine support they can fuck right off when it comes to their antisemitic rapture fantasy funding.

Yeah, it’s definately an “art of the possible” style deal…I don’t think Israel needs any more military funding from us, and Ukraine and Taiwan need everything we can shovel their way, but I don’t think we get what is truly needed (U & T) without giving even more money to a corrupt, oppressive government (I) that is clearly hell-bent on vengance, and if they take down Hamas, well that’s just a side benefit.

That being said, I can absolutely see these jags refusing to deal with reality, think they hold all the power in the situation, and refuse to pass anything except funding for Israel.

Yep, imagine the economic gains if only we could just stem the tide of these elective procedures and force the ladies to provide more worker/consumers.

unfortunately, it’s not a disconnect. it’s racism. which sentiment they select depends primarily on the skin color of the people they’re talking about.

it’s intolerable to me that most peoples’ response to this is simply going to be “fine, go with whoever, just get someone in there and let’s get back to business.” this is how the fascists will ultimately win- by wearing us down and counting on mass apathy.

Some of us are being very careful about what we say, because we know that our words will be used against us when the Republicans (or Tories) come for us.

Please don’t mistake that for apathy.

Considering the current and next generations are crippled by nondischargeable student loan, paying to social security to feed the boomers with their nonsaving retirement without any hope of getting it themselves, adding this on top, and then turn around saying current working generation not spending enough to prop up the “economy” with their avocado toast bullshit, not having kid because the astronomical cost, out of control housing cost, none existent healthcare, stagnated wage, tax break for the riches, cut back on social and welfare program which may as well create the workforce that will contribute to the economy, infrastructure deteriorate, insurgence of for profit prisons, fascism,… Every of their policies ruin the future aspect for the next voting block and they wondering why Millennial and gen Z refusing to buy into their bullshit.

… clearly the best solution is an endlessly increasing population that turns all of society into a giant pyramid scheme

I’m not a board-certified economist or theodicist of the invisible hand, so maybe I just don’t understand the deep mysteries; but is anyone else finding it hard to square the alleged labor shortage with the fact that (despite alleged increases in productivity due to automation) wages have been essentially stagnant for 50 years; rather than reflecting a Roe-shifted supply curve?

It’s just more “Great Replacement” bullshit. He wants more white babies, fewer Black and brown babies and women to accept their second class status. Pretty standard fascist talking points.

“Have more babies” is implied have more WHITE babies. Everyone else has too many kids they can’t afford.

The implication is that immigration is bad for maintaining the population because it means a higher percentage of racial minorities.

Why not welcoming immigrants?
