“La brea” means “the tar”. Writing “the La Brea tar pits” evaluates as “the the tar tar pits” which is almost a Star Wars character name. Mea culpa: I grew up nearby. Dad’s employer, a regional utility service, held its summer festivals in a park in the town of Brea. Them was the days!
