Subway's sandwiches aren't actually made with "bread" rules the Irish Supreme Court

Or, perhaps, two fried chicken slabs? sniff Pouring one out for the Double-Down.

Not subs, but sandwich-related:

Does that H-E-B off Spicewood Springs still have the kosher deli? Because that was the best chicken salad I have ever tasted. I liked Schlotzsky’s (which started in Austin), worked at one in high school (same time when I liked Subway); although it’s not a sub shop, either, I still like it better than Subway. But Schlotzsky’s isn’t as good as it used to be.

This can certainly be true.
I attended a conference over the course of a few days and had a really long travel day back home because of flight delays, etc…
On my layover, there was a “BBQ” place in the airport and I got a sandwich that I would ordinarily never eat. Not only was that delicious, but while I was in line I noticed that they had a large bin with Heineken bottles on ice. I grabbed one and proceeded to go pay, then thought for a second and leaned back over and took another one because I knew I would finish the first in 30 seconds - which turned out to be accurate. Not generally a big fan of Heineken, but it was good at that moment.

After all, there is precedence for this sort of thing in the Reinheitsgebot.

Must be other laws like this, but I can’t find any…

I used to live close to a Wonder Bread facility in Richmond, Va. and WOW! white bread never smelled so good! OMG

Which is amazing, because I am the worst baker in the world and I use a bread machine successfully twice a week (kids sandwich bread and pizza dough) and they could easily have the best bread in the world if they wanted to… and it likely wouldn’t cost much more.

I have a Hamilton Beach breadmaker at home. The bread comes out kinda lousy but it makes the apartment smell soooo good.

I’ve mentioned here before that my younger brother worked for Subway in New Haven CT back in the 90’s, and he told me they would grind up the old dry bread every week, mix it with some new flour, and use that to make more bread.

I’m not a baker. I’ve been told this is bullshit, not feasible from a baking standpoint. But he told me the story and sticks with it.

This seems like a pull my finger kind of thing…

This Is absurd. So it’s not to a particular standard? It’s still, obviously, bread. Serve it to 10,000 people and ask them what it is, 100% are going to tell you it’s bread. That makes it bread.

I’ll also stick up for subway, it’s our favorite road food. Like what you like, but for us it’s a better option than burgers-and-fries.

Until fairly recently they put azodicarbonamide in their flour, which is also used to make yoga mats and carpeting. I’m guessing it has a fairly distinctive smell.

I haven’t been to that HEB but if i’m ever in that area i’ll check it out. I do agree that Schlotzsky’s is pretty decent, sandwiches have a great taste to them though the meat quality isn’t as good as it used to be but i still recommend it in a pinch.

The best sandwiches i’ve had so far in Austin were in 3 places, i had the Reuben sandwich at Easy Tiger (very important to have them sub the thousand island for mustard. Though looks like its off the menu right now), the Cuban sandwich at a Brazilian restaurant by UT called Sao Paulo and the Reuben or maybe it was a Pastrami sandwich at Launderette in S Austin (looks like they’ve rotated their menu but the food there was great). There’s also a sub place by UT called Snarfs that’s pretty good

I mean sure, subway bread isn’t representative of all American bread, except most American bread tastes a lot sweeter to me than most bread I’m used to.
So in that sense, it kinda is.

Even in the US a Subway has that smell that’s vaguely like bread, but not the same as any bread you would have ever baked at home. I think it’s overboard to call it vomit scented, but the smell is not the same. I don’t have a good way to describe it except that it’s a bready but not-bread smell. Off bread smell?

You can call it what you like, just don’t try and claim it is tax exempt in Ireland.

I think some people are put off by the fact that, to them, cilantro tastes of soap. Which it does.

Delicious, delicious soap.

Sigh. Just because a compound is used to make something that’s inedible, does not make the compound inedible. Azodicarbonamide is safe, but idiots like The Food Babe (ugh) raised a panic, causing most companies to voluntarily stop using it. Cellulose is used to make rayon, which is used to make clothing, but it’s used in hundreds of food products, and it’s completely indigestible for humans.

Subway bread is bread. It was always bread, and it will continue to be bread. Not great bread, but bread just the same. This whole thing is stupid.

It’s not bread if you’ve got another category that is cake, and the difference is the amount of sugar…
