☭ Sup Marxists? ☭

It’s not actually a machine. It’s just a really good critique of time.

haha, YES. THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS.

Marx the Grinch is coming for your tree, your stockings, and even your coal.

  • You will no longer be allowed to be White, you must partake of enforced tanning. John Boehner has already been subjected to this tenet.
  • You will no longer be allowed to be Anglo-Saxon. When you fill out your government forms, you will select “Fog Horn” as your ethnic origin.
  • You will no longer be allowed to be Protestant. Because the people of the Frankfurt school were tolerant people, they give you a choice here: Hasidic Jew, Non-Practicing Jew (with guilt), Non-Practicing Jew (without guilt), Agnostic, Atheist, or Jedi (hey- it’s got to be ok if it starts with “Je”)

PS - let’s talk about the native american culture that was destroyed by your beloved WASP culture, mmmkay?

The Mayans were FRANKENFURTERS, with TIME MACHINES!?!? This explains quite a lot!

The word “Statist” reveals much about the speaker’s personality.

If they are used effectively, any words can reveal much about the speaker’s personality. But the meanings reside in those who speak and hear them.

As far as I can tell, if a speaker ascribes meaning to the term “statist” that speaker is likely to be a minarchist.

It doesn’t tell you anything about their economic ideology though. Statist is also used by some Libertarian-Socialists, mostly by those at the anarcho end of the spectrum (myself included).

I know that in this case it is being used by Lib-Caps though.

I dunno, my girlfriend’s brother is a proper, old school socialist and he describes himself as a statist.

I’m still waiting for “government schools” that one’s my favorite.

Full-ass Godwin in paragraph two. Save something for your closer, dude!

The comments are priceless too. At least in niche forums like this, the freak flags fly high:

Personally I wish I could have lived in the late 1800’s thru the early
1900’s seems to be a time when things were a little more balanced

I don’t know if he’s trying to reclaim the word. I’ve seriously only ever heard it used as a epithet against people who think that there is a purpose to having a government, or that a major feature of society is that we have obligations to one another (not just rights against one another).

The Jewish Exiles Return to Germany
Jürgen Habermas recalls philosophers and sociologists of Jewish background as returnees in the early Federal Republic Of Germany

Most of the emigrants decided to return, if at all, during the first years of the newly-founded Federal Republic. Very few of them received appointments. Between 1949 and 1953, the philosophers Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Helmut Kuhn, Michael Landmann, Karl Löwith, and Helmuth Plessner returned from exile to Frankfurt, Erlangen or Munich, Berlin, Heidelberg, and Göttingen. Among them, above all Karl Löwith and Helmuth Plessner exercised an influence that extended beyond their immediate workplace. Löwith’s critique of ideas in the philosophy of history that were inspired by the history of salvation may also have confirmed some of the war veterans among the students in rejecting the ideas of 1789; but reading Weltgeschichte und Heilsgeschehen [Meaning in History] aroused in all students more than anything else a salutary distrust of the use of background assumptions of the philosophy of history as a substitute for metaphysics. His other major work, From Hegel to Nietzsche, still reflects the younger Löwith’s interests in the individual in the role of a fellow human being. It made such an impression on me that I subsequently added an introductory chapter on the Young Hegelians to my dissertation after I had completed the main part.

And today, Ben Kuchera published GamerGate, criticism, ideology and ‘They Live’ , citing a video by Marxist critic Slavoj Žižek on how ‘They Live’ illustrates the nature of ideology.

Can’t watch yet, can’t wait to watch. The surrounding text is dead on.

I’ll admit to only reading about the first 50 pages of Žižek’s “The Parallax View,” enough to understand his thesis and that I disagree with him he’s objectively wrong about the basic nature of reality, but I’m always excited when people reference him.

EDIT: I found some new info (see my reply below) and felt like I should revise this post a bit. I removed the twitter embeds to remove reference to this project and the creator. But because I don’t like memory-holing things I kept the links. Be advised, though, that I don’t think this is as interesting or as funny as when I first posted it. :frowning:

I made the list. Daneel too! (And Beschizza, GlennF, and Xeni)

It’s being made by a guy who’s been a pretty persistent troll / antagonist on twitter. I’ve seen him burn through a couple of twitter accounts already. From what I’ve seen, he seems a bit obsessed with having unproductive conversations. Though word is that he can be more scary than that

it’s interesting to think that because of who I follow I might actually have the convenience of having actively unpleasant people avoid me. I know there’s the old filter bubble problem, but I’m seeing more upside at the moment.

Yeah, so that’s something I’m not going to lose sleep over.

Just wanted to poke my head in here and thank everyone for a fascinating thread, one of the best I’ve seen on any forum. It’s also a timely reminder that it’s easy to talk past each other, especially on the internet.

It’s hard to tell the difference between someone being (a) uninformed or ignorant, (b) being simply so far on the “opposite” side of the debate that you have no common language, and © being a smartass who’s acting like an idiot.

Since I can recognise when I’m in category (a), I’ll duck back out and leave you all to it! Anyway, thanks. I can see I have some reading to do.
