120,000 people, and I didn’t make the list?
Now I’m pissed.
120,000 people, and I didn’t make the list?
Now I’m pissed.
I made the list! I feel honored.
I got an account suspended on the first link… FWIW
#SJW HULK DISAPPOINT NOT ON LIST. SMASH!
Yeah, and recognition of that I think, contributed to various people in this thread having an awful lot of patience for a ideologue.
I checked again, and to my relief, they list my Twitter handle, which is Foolish_Owl.
Well, turns out the guy who made this blocker is more awful than I knew [trigger warning]. I feel icky for exposing other people to him/his project.
Enjoying the wide-ranging conversation, but don’t have time to contribute. Just wanted to let y’all know it’s triggered several additions to the reading list.
Trigger Warning. May induce feelings of bibliomania.
Yes, this! A good friend of mine from Kuwait has been re-writing Shias back into the history of Kuwait. Would I write that book and do as an effective job as he could, as he is a member of that community, even if I had the language or cultural studies back ground? Or would it just come off as yet another western, elite, white person imposing their western normative views on some other group? Would I be engaging in an act of orientalism, much like Bernard Lewis has done?
Remember the good old days when opium was the opiate of the masses?
Now we have to settle for these chemicals our own bodies produce in response to self-stimulation?
Ugh.
Something of an aside, but Marx’s “opiate of the masses” line almost always gets used, in ignorance of its context, to mean nearly the exact opposite of what Marx actually meant. Marx’s point was that it’s a bad idea to demand that the poor give up religion, because it’s almost the only relief they have from misery (1), and if you do demand it, they’ll just write you off as an elitist asshole. See: Richard Dawkins. Marx split with the “new atheists” of his day near the start of his career.
(1) It’s kind of like how, if you’re sexually frustrated, masturbation is a good idea.

So, when we’re not being cultural marxists, we plan surprise attacks against actual marxists.
Seems legit.
Some Marxist resources.
[Real Cultural Marxists dislike sentimentality] (http://www.warscapes.com/opinion/sentimentality-critique-humans-new-york)
When it seems to imply criticism but actually displaces it, as the author of that article says of “Humans of New York”.
For the record, you have the best GIFs.
