Maybe we (white, male, cis-gendered, and other privileged people) should feel guilty about the privilege we have. Even though we didn’t choose our privilege, feeling guilty is the first step towards understanding and maybe even actually doing something to help change the structures that produce these inequalities.

I’m fat. Ooh, a book with a fat person in it. I feel so offended. Ban it from every possible venue you can!!

I don’t want to totally derail the conversation, I think Coates showing up to support the teacher and class is quite wonderful, but as someone who was raised Catholic, I think ‘guilt’ is a highly over rated emotion.
At its very best, it can be a bridge to other, much more productive emotions.
I mean, it shouldn’t be the reason we stop teaching kids, but also, we shouldn’t advocate that people should feel guilt about this stuff. Recognizing our privilege is another whole thing.
