Teacher who fed puppy to snapping turtle in front of children found not guilty of animal cruelty

On the contrary, it seems more likely that cats made that choice about humans.

False overgeneralization: personally, I would totally have a problem with a teacher doing the exact same thing with a rat in front of my kid (who is a minor) without my permission; regardless whether my kid thought ‘she could handle it’ or not.

pretty sure, they domesticated us and decided we were helpful to keep around. my cat acts as if this is the case and he is pretty confident about this fact.

i had other comments to several people going, but after reading this thread i wish @Falcor was still around to eat it and opted for some light cat humor.

My puppy though, he’s got 10 days (probably).
He’s everything to me.

Snappers will eat chicken, you don’t have to feed them live animals. And feeding a puppy to a snapping turtle is plain freaking twisted. We have a pet snake that eats frozen mice (you have to defrost them in a cup of hot water first). This was totally unnecessary. But hey, science or whatever.

no, no, in this case, it’s that us triggered, irrational snowflakes aren’t in touch with nature and rural America and the fact that other cultures eat dog, so this makes it all okay… /s

From the Herald Journal article:

Crosland allegedly talked to the three boys about death by drowning, saying it was faster and less painful than allowing it to starve to death on the farm, and in its weakened state, the puppy reportedly died quickly, Hansen said.

While this occurred at about 4:30 p.m., nearly an hour after classes were dismissed, Hansen said it was reported by a janitor who claims to have heard the puppy and entered the locked classroom where the animals are kept.

So the puppy did NOT die quickly and without pain.

Meanwhile, a biology teacher should know that animals need to be feed their correct diets, not whatever they feel like getting rid of. For example:

http://www.theturtlesource.com/caresheet_snapping_turtle.asp

Snapping turtles are omnivorous in nature, feeding on a wide variety of live prey and also eagerly eating floating aquatic vegetation. In captivity, they feed aggressively on fish, worms, and crayfish, and will eat floating commercial pellets as hatchlings, juveniles, and adults. They eat so well, in fact, that they can become quite overweight in captivity. By not overfeeding them, and by keeping their cage decorations complex and giving them large enclosures, keepers can keep their snappers healthy and happy.

Fish, worms, and crayfish are not puppies. And they don’t cry out so loudly that a janitor feels the need to unlock a classroom to figure out what the problem is.

Cool. And if this turtle met this puppy in the wild, it would still eat it.

That’s an exceeding unlikely occurrence.

When I went to school I was bullied so badly that I have lost count of the amount of times I attempted suicide. So I would probably argue yes to that.

But I think I will just agree to disagree with you on these issues. My political perspective is similar to anarcho-communism, which I know you aren’t, and I don’t have the emotional energy to get into a full political debate on what is and isn’t authoritarian coercion right now.

Do not assume you are the only person or bbs user to have been bullied that badly when a kid.

And how a socio political view somehow can be equated to a dog being trained to do police work or some other animal vocation is beyond the mental gymnastics that I would care to ever do.

Agree to disagree is fine. Have a good night.

They always say to include a call to violence… er… action in your posts.

Who “says that,” exactly?

Well, they’ve had nine months to can his twisted ass and he’s still teaching. I hope some parents sue the district for letting him do that in front of kids. There is a world of moral difference between natural predation in the wild and feeding a mentally and emotionally complex domesticated pet live to a captured predator and then rationalizing it with lawyering. When the moral standard for the conduct of educators, cops and other public servents is “it’s not illegal” their compass is broken.

Robert Crosland’s not teaching kids about the circle of life. He’s teaching them that he’s a vicious piece of shit who shouldn’t be allowed around other people’s children. Not as bad a vindictive cop who shot a civlian’s puppy for spite is a piss-poor standard to which to hold a teacher.

The link between animal cruelty and human cruelty has been known since ancient times even to cultures where it was and remains common to raise livestock to feed family and other livestock. What Crosland did was completely gratuitous.
