As a CEO in Tech, his company is probably run largely by Asian people so his attitude is surprising to say the least.
Does anyone really buy the oftused binary shit of going from “fuck you, [race/ethnic slur], go back where you came from” to “oops”?
You might think that, but you’d be mistaken:
" A new report by Ascend shows that Asian American CEOs are the exception, not the norm.
Rather than being overrepresented in Silicon Valley, Asian American executives are severely underrepresented. They may be hired in large numbers by tech companies, but Asian Americans are the group least likely to be promoted into managerial and executive ranks"
Admittedly my experience is mainly on the engineering side, where I am usually the only non-asian person in the team. But executives should know that. They should know where their money comes from.
Indeed - there is “running” a company, and then there is actually producing value for the company.
+1 to kudos for the server who stood up to the abuser on behalf of her guests.
Also, WTF are people in California doing eating out while our Covid-19 rate is accelerating?!
I don’t know if this has already been posted elsewhere on BB. This one provides an interesting leadup to the incident. This is one f____d up asshole.
I’d love to know how many tech CEOs there are in the Valley who hold the same or similar beliefs but have just managed keep them close to their chest. My guess is it’s the raw majority of them.
No, I think you’re right and I don’t think that example is papering over racism because, whatever the motivating instance, it is still a racist act that stems from a racist belief, however lightly held. That’s why it is critical to confront it in society as well as in ourselves. The fallacy of big “R” racism being the only form that bears examination is the opposite of what progress is trying to achieve.
It reminds me of the idea of the various forms of jihad. The struggle within is considered the greater jihad while the jihad against a physical enemy is known as the lesser jihad. Similarly, the struggle against public and institutional racism is secondary to and predicated on the success of the inner and personal struggle against racism. Institutions toppled can be rebuilt if the source of hatred isn’t abolished. This doesn’t preclude them from happening at the same time, though.
It’s not surprising that what you witnessed came at moments of duress. As you say, we pick up the biggest stick we can find when backed into a corner. The question is really who backed us into the corner in the first place?
No need to stop. He could just fall out the window…
You just KNOW the mother is a Daily Mail reader, so it makes sense that she spoke to them.
Property developer from rural Northumberland? Yeah, she probably is. But she was clearly appalled by her son’s actions and exasperated with his addiction so the Mail doesn’t seem to have done too much damage yet.
Thank you for that feature on Gennica Cochran. This part is worth repeating:
Cochran says be kind to your servers, it’s a tough job. To that end people are being very kind to her. There are at least three separate GoFundMe pages that were created on her behalf. People are also Venmo’ing her money directly. The amount is growing towards six figures. She says it’ll allow her to focus more on doing what she loves, teaching yoga, but she is also giving lots of thought to how and where she can donate the money to others including in the service industry.
The three GoFundMe pages are listed below:
A Big Tip for an Everyday Hero

Give the waitress at Lucia a tip!
It gives the impression that it was in the “fake it until you make it” stage of the cycle: Pretend to be more established and capable than it is, land a contract, struggle to complete it and hopefully build from there.
Oops.
GoFundMe.
I now GoFundHer.
Did y’all heard any crazies claiming the video was a deepfake?
No. Did you?
Maybe the guy’s just funning me…
I still don’t know what you’re talking about.
And, he’s out. "It is with regret that my initial statement and apology did not go far enough in addressing my behavior in Carmel last weekend and the steps that I need to take, " … “I can confirm that I have stepped down from Solid8, terminating all business relationships with immediate effect.”
