“Very fine people on both sides.”

A lot of professions can claim they get intrinsic value from their work. Doctors, Teachers, Crafters, etc.
But I don’t know why someone would aspire to become a bank president if not just to get free money.

This is one of those communities outside Nashville where “good” (meaning white) people go to escape “crime” (meaning black people). These towns are growing at a sickening rate. Twenty years ago, Franklin was about as far out as this process had gotten.

I taught at a major university in Tennessee, and I absolutely loathed the smug little right-wing turds coming from these communities. They were so condescending and snotty while being at the same time ignorant. I don’t mean ignorant in terms of being the opposite of “woke.” That too. But I mean they acted like they’d never read a book in their life. I mean, stuff like you’d have a multiple choice question about the medium a painting was in, and you’d put one of the options as concrete and another as marble, because you wanted to throw them a bone, and a significant number would select concrete or marble, and not one of the two kinds of paint that were the other options.

So, yeah, um, I have significant bias here, but my point is that it shouldn’t be surprising that Mayor Yahoo of Yahooville was dumb enough to try to pull off this sort of caper. Or that these yahoos voted for our Yahoo-in-Chief. They’re so up their own ass they think shit smells nice.

I remember a comic from many years ago (possibly by Shel Silverstein?) about a masked robber who cases a bank, walks in, applies for a job as a teller, spends decades working his way up the corporate ladder, becomes Bank President at a ripe old age, then hobbles into the vault and hauls several sacks of cash out into his still-waiting getaway vehicle before driving off.

I might be missing the forest for the trees here, but I can’t get past the fact that the reported haul includes “three tweezers”. Don’t those come in pairs?

Because if you are a mayor and want to steal, you could steal way more asking bribes and faking documents. (first example I found above)

People that work at banks don’t really make “bank”. OWNERS are the ones who make the money.

It is surprising that the John Blade admiration page hasn’t been taken down.

Politicians tend to get in way more trouble trying to cover stuff up, than for whatever non-crime they didn’t want known. This feels like stuff he’s buying for a mistress and didn’t want on his CC.

But then again, rich people can be some of the cheapest assholes (see Trump etc) and feel entitled to not paying for ‘small’ things. I once did a outdoor tile job for a Walmart exec (Tom Coughlin) who turned out to be embezzling expense vouchers for about 500k of stuff. He was caught paying for glasses at the Walmart eye doctor with a gift card that hasn’t been put out yet, so the person working there noticed. This dude was making probably 1M a year and was covering his backyard in limestone. But he didn’t want to pay for ONE PAIR OF GLASSES from an off-brand eyedoctor.

Then there was an engineer at work who got fired for stealing toilet paper from the men’s room; jammed a bunch into his briefcase.

Not dumb. Entitled. I worked for a doc that got busted, then let go, for walking out of a Starbucks with an espresso machine. Like just stole it. These folks aren’t stupid. They just think they are entitled to do these things, and fuck the rest of us.

I half agree with you. The entitlement is definitely the problem. They need to know no more than they do, so they see no reason to do more. But the mind is like a muscle. If you don’t use it, it doesn’t develop. And when I’m saying “mind” here I’m thinking about things like self-awareness, awareness of others, forethought, and so on, not just “book larnin’.”

Maybe they’re smart like a hedgehog, where instead of rolling into a ball, you have relying on privilege. But they’re definitely not smart like a fox.
