Texas cops seize lawn-sign depicting GOP elephant as sexual predator

Save your paint. Though squarely in free speech territory, her version might be considered plagiarism? She was copying a much better version from editorial cartoonist Anne Telnaes during the Roy Moore campaign, from the clickthrough…

It’s ironic - this is so clearly a prime example of “censorship,” yet I suspect so many of those who yell the most loudly about “censorship” won’t even recognize it in action, because it doesn’t involve a(n alt-right asshole’s) Twitter account being suspended.

In America that’s also just known as “policing,” unfortunately.

That must be the famous free speech thing USians tell me only they have and all others don’t.

The kind of person who is determined to find an excuse, however absurd, to silence a political opinion that he/she disagrees with.

I wonder how often that city manager rants about the importance of “liberty”, and how would he react to an image of an elephant dumping on the Constitution?

I do remember a truck driver who had her rig confiscated on grounds of displaying pornography while driving through Texas. The offending picture was a headshot of Howard, Robin and Fred (from Howard Stern for the 2 of you who don’t know) on her door. So pornography is apparently anything that a conservative cop gets pissed off about.

But truck nuts are A-Okay? Got it.

Classic Streisand effect. If people had not complained and had the sign removed, it wouldn’t have gotten national attention. Well played Marion Stanford.

It’s basically a rorschach test for pedophiles. “Tell me, what story are the stick figures telling you in this picture.”

That’s a very good idea. How about if the penalty doubled every time a cop did something that was already shown to be illegal—the resulting exponential growth in penalties would very quickly have them paying attention.

I would’ve said “worse” (it looks like inexpertly-assembled clipart, even though I can see it isn’t, and the elephant’s trunk is just sort of tugging on the girl’s skirt, which totally blunts the point), but it does seem like that’s where the lawn sign was lifted from.

or that’s that particular cop’s exact kink … maybe he wanted the sign for himself

Is a bad day more people, or fewer?

I totally want this sign as a bumper sticker.

So, the first amendment case law around private display of signs is nuanced and rarely followed appropriately. Odds are the law you are talking about falls afoul of settled case law.

That works, if you assume the penalty would ever be applied the first time. There are structural and cultural barriers that stop even the first offense from being punished.

I came here specifically to request that. Make it so.
