Well, the um… headline? Who do you trust, Rob Beschizza or your lying eyes?
If you think fluoride in the water is a problem you are as nuts as her. There are plenty of places in world with higher fluoride contents to the places where it is added with zero problems but far better teeth. I wonder is you are one of the nuts that think aspartame is bad also (hint there is zero evidence that it’s not safe)
No she’s not a Mayor, I think it must be her name, Mary Lou Bruner, totally reads as Mayor Lou Bruner.
At least most of the press associated with her is openly naming her batshit cra-cra, though that may shore up her vote among the very large tee-balling party in Texas, at least others will know who not to vote for.
When it comes to crude political commentary, LBJ has nothing on Gough Whitlam.
Reportedly, after the first time that Gough ever visited Tasmania, he was asked what he thought of the place. His response?
“At least all of the inbreeding means that there’s always a chance of a two-headed blowjob”.
Seriously?
Texas, gtfo.
Ha-Ha!
oh, yeah: don’t get me wrong, i know they’re not faking it.
what i mean is, they don’t treat these questions the way you or i may treat a question like: is climate change real, or did humans and dinosaurs live at different times.
they’re not interested in research, and they don’t really care whether these things are literally true or not. they presuppose something similar must be true ( and especially because so many people they know and trust are saying such things ) so who cares if they’re exactly right or not.
what’s important to them, as far as i can tell, is the feeling behind the “fact”.
it’s why you can’t reason with them. they know they are right, because the feeling comes first.
i’m not sure exactly how you fight it – but it involves building up trust, and not always just lining up facts.
i think the lgbtq community got it right. by coming out of the closet, as dangerous as that was and still is, it’s exposed americans to friends who – surprise! – are gay.
the trust was already there between friends, and therefore opinion in the us about gay marriage was able to shift quickly. no one was ever going to win the argument by fighting every bizarre “homosexual agenda fact” that got trotted around.
IIRC fluoridation paranoia was based on a few areas that got their water from springs running through natural fluoride deposits and thus had extremely high levels of it. This can indeed have deleterious health effects. But that’s orders of magnitude more fluoride than anyone ever intentionally introduces into water supplies.

ETA: Aspartame may be safe, but it tastes awful.
Hey Rob…
How does shit like this even ever get into print??? This is news-worthy???
Come on…really???
Um… “gay hooker”?
The word you’re looking for is “hustler”.
Aka mejor pendejo
Not libel…
Are you disappointed with Boing Boing?
That a Texas politician and someone who possibly will have an influence on not just Texas educational standards but national educational standards is a complete fucking lunatic? How is that not newsworthy?
You just created an account to post that? Lurk moar, bro.
pendeja?
If HRC wins the primary and come November, I’m feeling weird about who to vote for, I’m going to come back and read your post. Because it’s the thing that will make me feel most happy about voting for her. I’m not a huge fan of her politics, but damn I cannot abide her haters.
Thanks for your input.
Hillary’s not the only person to make that “claim”. It’s a well-known phenomenon.
Try this little experiment: when someone mentions “takers and losers”, respond by saying “Yeah, what is it with white people, anyway? Why do they take the majority of welfare payments and cause the majority of crimes?”
Which is not crazy, because it’s actually true…that’s the point.
What Hillary was talking about is called dog-whistle politics. It’s not some liberal conspiracy; it’s a real thing. Also see the Southern Strategy. Republicans have been using appeals to racism to garner votes for a long time.
