All the weenies who thought this was a bad idea will be looking pretty dumb when the next mass shooter steps into that classroom and gets his lights punched out by the battle-hardened veterans of Middle School Fight Club.
I sort of sympathize with the teacher. If the little brats want to fight, go for it. Society puts too much responsibility onto teachers; social worker, negotiator, guidance councilor.
No. I sympathize with teachers. I have close family and friends that are teachers. I’ve substitute taught in elementary, middle and high schools. I know it can be rough. But what’s happening in that video is the opposite of what the job is. And don’t call the students brats. You don’t know them.
Apparently, my middle school used to have a boxing policy. If you really wanted a match, you could both request a formal setup in the gym after school. Funnily enough, though, you must go ten rounds once you get in a ring. This meant they’d be enthusiastic for the first two and then be mutually cursing the coach by the 3rd round. Boxing’s exhausting. Actual equipment and oversight also kept injuries down.
It also meant that there was a clear point about not fighting in the halls. If it is a big enough issue, follow the protocol. Otherwise, keep your hands to yourself.
You sympathize with an adult who manipulated kids who are by definition young enough not to know better into violent encounters for fun at the place where they are supposed to be learning how to function in society??? While drawing a paycheck for it? And possibly retaliated by threatening to kill thirteen year old girl for whistleblowing?
Alright I guess?
Well, but who cares about brats… /s
Substitute teachers are teachers. It’s in the name. And it would not be more or less horrible had she been a permanent staff teacher. She was in a position of authority and abused it. Period.
But… but… no true scotsman!!! /s
Subs are not ALWAYS teachers. In many states they are simply a warm body that doesn’t mind rotten pay to be crappy with kids. I am a teacher and have worked long and hard to get where I am. I don’t appreciate being lumped in with someone who might very well not have the same accreditation as I.
No one is doing that.
By not distinguishing that the person that perpetrated this act was indeed a substitute teacher, it makes teachers look bad. Right now the politicians have painted us as evil groomers for child sex and brainwashed. Teachers don’t need any more bad press. It simply would have been better journalism to point out that the person was a substitute teacher.
Mesquite Police Department Information Office
Press Release #2023-01
Mesquite ISD Substitute Arrested
On Thursday, April 13, 2023 the Mesquite Police Department was notified of an incident that occurred at Kimbrough Middle School on April 12, 2023 where a substitute teacher encouraged students to fight inside her classroom. Video of this incident was forwarded to Mesquite Police Investigators for review.
On Monday, April 17, 2023 the Mesquite Police Department arrested Natally Garcia, a 24-year-old female from Dallas, Texas. She is being charged with four counts of Endangering a Child. Investigators determined that Garcia engaged in conduct that placed four students in danger of bodily injury.
What makes teachers look bad is this sort of abhorrent behavior. This individual was a teacher. She was a substitute, sure, but in her function on that day, she was a teacher. I cannot grasp “it wasn’t so bad since she was a substitute.” Does that change the damage done to the kids? Does it really change the damage done to the profession? And would you seriously demean the value of substitute teachers like this? Without them, schools would not function. If you have knowledge that this person was in some way previously known to be unsuited to the job, please reveal. Otherwise this is just “she wasn’t really a teacher, so it doesn’t count.” I do not accept that.
Um… dude, are you under the impression that others in your profession can’t be assholes? Because they can. There are some who are gleefully going along with right wing attacks on your profession, for example.
So you’re okay with OTHERS being made to look bad as a groups, but not YOUR group. Seems like you’d want people who are harming children out, whether or not they are full time teachers.
I was saying she was in the role of a teacher, but not a certified teacher herself. I am saying the headline should have said she was a sub not a teacher. Teachers have more qualifications than subs, and in some states, you have to be a certain age and have no training to be a sub. I worked hard to get my certification and when a Sub gets labeled as a teacher, it gives the teacher a bad name. I am NOT apologizing for the horrible sub. I don’t want people to think I am the same as a sub. You don’t label someone that puts a bandaid on a wound a doctor.
So you are fine if she had been a certified teacher?
We’re aware. No one here is attacking teachers, people here are talking about one individuals actions.
And newsflash, the very people who are going to attack teachers as a category are not going to use something like this as a pretext. They will do it, because they hate public education and they don’t believe teachers are valuable in the first place. It doesn’t matter what label you apply to this woman - they do not see a difference no matter how much you stress it.
You really are barking up the wrong tree here, my friend.
Perspective: The Texas public educational system has been under sustained attack for nearly 40 years now and getting rid of it is one of our governor’s top priorities right after making sure the maximum amount of people are accidentally or otherwise murdered by cops and that the highest possible number of pregnant women die. Our schools are dying. Our children are dying.
