Funny, I view that as a reason to be disappointed in New Zealand. It’s just an anti-immigrant law that bans any non-citizens (except Aussies and Singaporeans, because it would violate existing trade agreements to discriminate against them) from buying homes (not just “billionaire land squatters,” whatever that means) without special individual permission of the Overseas Investment Office. How much do you want to bet in reality billionaires will find that their requests get approved while ordinary people do not?
It’s a anti-immigrant, anti-foreign law that is no different in rule or morality than Trump’s tariffs or immigration restrictions. Sounds like something Trump would love.
