The Chinese balloon was 90 feet in diameter - that’s 30 yards!!! With a payload of up to 2700lbs! It is orders of magnitude larger than the old spy satellite capsules and parachutes. It would be like trying to catch a bus with a badminton net.
I think the reality of this is going to be that we wanted to try to salvage as much of the intelligence from it as we could, and that’s why we didn’t drop it (heavily or lightly) over Montana, or anywhere else in the US.
