A two-hour drive to Mt. Pinos further north gets a Los Angelian a fair view (weather permitting) of the Milky Way. It’s where I occasionally use my telescope and enjoy meteor showers.
Our UFO prank involved a large novelty inflatable pool float, Christmas lights, strips of Mylar, helium, and a prevailing wind that blew towards a nearby Marine air base. Hilarity ensued.

Great, now that you’ve moved this from local legend to “out in the intarwebz”, the “history” channel is going to do a 2 hour special and at least three series on “The Hunt for the Creature from the Sandpits!”…
