I’m pretty sure the FBI and NSA aren’t as clueless as we would like to believe. I think a lot of the rhetoric is carefully constructed as a negotiation tactic.
I would wager that in the end, tech companies will compromise and add a way for cell phones to be decrypted. From a law enforcement perspective, it isn’t what they think they want, but it’s better than the current situation. For consumers, it’s not much of a change and doesn’t expose them to significantly more risk.
