Could have gone a bit further back to include “L’homme armé”- that’s a proper meme. It appeared in the mid 15th century, quickly became popular all over Europe, and now no-one has a clue what it was all about.

Can someone with music knowledge explain why Despacito seems to stand out among the recent ones? I’ve probably only heard it 3 or 4 times, about the same as most of the others after about 1990. Yes, I live in a shack in the woods. Wow, it is some ultra-catchy earworm.
