May I recommend, “What’s Bred in the Bone” by Robertson Davies wherein a young man, thru odd byways, becomes an art forger and then paints a forgery of something nonexistent. It is a masterpiece and he can’t lay claim to it. The second book in a trilogy.

Yeah, that’s why I don’t own it.
He was murdered (not because of the book) almost immediately after it was released, so I assume there’s some sort of family squabble over the publishing rights.
