You can always leave the international organizations that vex you so badly.
There’s an interesting history behind the water park venture. Montgomery’s tourist dollars come almost entirely from Civil Rights-related activities. (It’s one reason why my otherwise-nutty state hasn’t gotten caught up in the same level of CRT-related BS that Texas and Florida have. Civil Rights history is deeply ingrained in the identity of middle Alabama.)
Far and away the leading tourist attraction in Montgomery is the Equal Justice Initiative. The Legacy Museum is an incredible, horrible, exhausting, amazing place. Other “attractions” are here, too. But the Legacy Museum is the big one. In 2019 it saw 400,000 visitors coming from across the country and around the world. It attracts so many people that it can be tough to get in. So a few years ago the EJI, which runs the museum and other educational initiatives, asked the city to expand the tourist offerings to handle overflow. And, something non-Civil Rights related. The EJI has a lot of economic power, so this set things in motion.
The Alabama River runs by Montgomery, and there’s already a lively waterfront thing going. And the is kayaking and whitewater stuff upriver on the Coosa, so there was a ready-made community. A whitewater park seemed a good idea. The site is pretty close to downtown, and will help redevelop a very run-down area without the seize-and-displace that might normally occur.
From the it was political corruption as usual. I’m not surprised that the politicians interviewed had no idea about details. I’ve been sitting in on city council meetings in my -burb for years, and I see this all the time. “I don’t see a cost associated with the expenditure we’re voting on,” followed by “Aye!”
No wonder Tucker is hot for M&Ms…
Glad I stopped buying Chick-fil-A
I’m not sure if I’ve ever been to Chick-fil-A. There were none in my area until after the owner’s bigotry was exposed, so I’ve never gone to one. That just leaves the trip to Nashville I was on a number of years ago, we stopped at an unfamiliar fast food place, though I can’t remember what it was.
I liked their breakfasts and their kids meal was one of the few options my kid would eat when she was 2. But then I learned about the owners and the shit they got up to using profits from the franchises like those I went to. No more Chick-fil-A. I feel icky that I didn’t know sooner.
The principal reasons for the steep hike, according to the Journal and NPR, are the fast-rising costs of sugar, flour, milk, and labor.
What happened to the rising cost of cocoa the candy industry has been moaning about for the last 20 years?
“And if you can’t, well, that’s your own fault for not choosing to be rich.”
That guy’s an absolute waste of oxygen. Not only does he not give a shit about anyone, he doesn’t plan on doing anything in his role as representative.
Well, except for getting rich.
He’s run unopposed in the last 2 primaries and won the last several general elections about 67% to 31%.
The bastard is in a safe seat.
