I found a post-restoration photo:
It used to emit an electrical hum, but that device was disconnected in the early 70s.

My recollection from the novel is that it is non-reflective, (like Hotblack Desiato’s spaceship), but essentially frictionless to the touch. Oh, and it’s full of stars.

Guessing the sculptor had a more limited access to construction materials.

I’m reading a book about the making of 2001. There’s an interesting section on how the Monolith came to its final design. Apparently at one time it was going to be transparent plexiglass, but that version was built, judged harshly, and discarded.
Book highly recommended.
